Thank you for telling Connecticut legislators that you oppose all road tolling within the state of CT!

Please take a few moments to tell lawmakers in Connecticut that you reject Governor Lamont's transparently false choice between tolls and more taxes, and that if the State were to truly dedicate all gas tax revenues towards road projects only there would be no need for tolls or additional revenue for road infrastructure -- the tolls are just more fungible money for the state to spend, and a pretext to increase the overall incidence (amount) of taxation, mainly of CT residents, to pay for past mistakes without properly adressing their root causes and overall poor fiscal policy.

This special Action Alert variant page of the LobbyByFax service will transmit a response, below, to your representatives in the CT Senate and Assembly, and may be modified and customized in your own words to tell elected officials to vote NO on any toll plans or proposals in Connecticut.

Citizens and Motorists Against Connecticut Tolling

This page allows both Connecticut residents and out of state motorists to inform the Connecticut Senate and General Assembly that the implementation of tolls on what are currently free roads - paid for by taxpayer money with the implicit promise that they remain free - is a foolish, intrusive, and overly bureaucratic method to raise revenue, and sets a dangerous precedent which other states may follow both as a retaliatory measure and/or an easy means to raise revenue in an era of tight budgets and increasing resource demands.

As the the Senate and Assembly in Hartford have only four (4) fax machines for constituent correspondence and groups the recipient lawmakers by party (a Democratic and a Republican fax line for the Senate, and a similar arrangement in the Assembly (the lower house)), this special alert was created as the LobbyByFax system generally handles the US Congress and state capitols where a specific fax is assigned to a given legislator, which, with only 4 fax lines, would be overkill in this situation.

To send a fax to Hartford in opposition of tolling Connecticut's gas tax supported highways, Connecticut residents may enter their ZIP code as indicated below, and a fax will be sent to their delegation (Senator and Assemblyman) in Hartford.

Dear [Automatically placed here based on your ZIP code], I oppose any form of tolling of Connecituct's highways for the following reasons: 1. Tolling Roads is inefficient and creates a new and costly government bureaucracy, while the gas tax has very little overhead and requires no additional government function - the tax is collected at the pump and, if lawmakers do not divert funds from the gas tax as they have many times in the past, can go directly to improving roads and building new facilities. 2. We've been told the "lock box" story before: The gas tax, had it not been raided by politicians in 1987, 1989, 1992, and so on, would be more than sufficient to meet Connecticut's needs. There is no reason the gas tax should be used to pay for DMV employee pensions or to have liabilities which the state can't otherwise afford added to it. No one in Hartford has given any indication that with tolls it will be different, and I do not trust that the Legislature will be able to keep their hands off temptingly large sums of money which tolling will take in. 3. I do not want my information shared with other states! Should CT enact tolling, it will, as has recently been reported, need to share registration information with other states, so that a distant state may prohibit me from registering, even if there is a mistake with toll records or some other problem. I would be required to pay the distant state, or appear in that state (at my cost) to defend myself. I do not want another layer of government - from another state no less - telling me that I can not register my car in my own state! 4. We pay enough taxes in Connecticut - just because the gas tax fund has been raided year after year after year, doesn't mean that I now have to pay even more to drive due to the continual mismanagement of Connecticut's finances. 5. Other than a few roads and facilities, NO OTHER state in New England charges tolls on Federally-funded Interstates. Tolls are currently charged on the Masspike and the Maine Turnpike (both of which were turnpikes before the Interstate system was built), one toll barrier on I-93 in Concord, NH, the Jamestown/Newport Bridge in Rhode Island, and the Spaulding Turnpike in NH (again which pre-dated the Interstate system and was built entirely with state funds). I'm aware that Rhode Island also has recently implemented truck tolls on I-95 and I-295, but it is likely they will be overturned, requiring tolling for all vehicles, breaking a promise made to Rhode Island motorists. Do we want the same sort of problems here if/when the promised toll discounts are not approved by the Federal Government or it disallows other key aspects of the toll plan? Do we also want these other states, who have very limited tolling, to retaliate against CT and set up an equally expansive toll program, costing CT motorists even more when they travel there? 6. Adding tolls will reduce tourism, and provide even less of an incentive for people to stay in CT, let alone move here. CT is a nice place to live, but with so many other more vibrant areas nearby, and with weather which isn't favorable for outdoor activities and tourist visits for 6 months out of the year, Connecticut should not be adding costs to disincentivize people to visit and stay. 7. I don't like the notion of a series of cameras on the road keeping track of everywhere people drive. While I'm aware that my cell phone can potentially do that as well, I have the option to turn it off if I wish, but I have no such optoin to "not be tracked" with toll gantries tracking everywhere I drive. 8. Road construction costs in Connecticut are higher than almost any other state - why not work on reducing them before you reflexively tax us even more? 9. Trust in government is being further eroded - I-84 and I-91 were paid for by our tax dollars and maintained by gas tax revenue, and I-95 tolls were removed in return for Federal money. The promise of toll free driving which was the foundation upon which most of our nation's roads were built is being vitiated by the unending self-interest of politicians who it seems are just making up excuses to find new ways to pay for a $500 Million bailout of Hartford and poor decisions to de-fund state pension plans. A promise is a promise, and I expect the roads to remain free! 10. Electronic tolling is too easy to implement and can generate too much revenue for government to ignore - what's to stop future legislators from putting up tolls on CT-2 or CT-8, or for that matter, along US-1, or the Berlin Turnpike, or any other road which is heavily traveled, just to bring in some extra revenue under the pretense of some immediate and urgent need? If we can't trust legislators to keep the promise of free interstates, why should we trust that any of the above roads will remain free? 11. While some argue that with the advent of electric and alternative-fuel cars the gas tax can not bring in the revenue required, I really don't see too many electric or alternative-fuel vehicles on the road, so this is a false argument. Why should 99% of CT motorists have to be burdened by tolls for the less than 1% who have electric cars or alternative-fuel vehicles? And if the state is so concerned about capturing every penny of revenue from all motorists, it can find ways to have the less than 1% of electric/alternative vehicles pay some approximation of gas tax without burdening the 99% of us with gas-powered cars. Therefore, for the above reasons, I oppose any form of road tolling, and will base my future voting on your efforts to defeat this costly, foolish, and unconstructive scheme. Thank you!
